Top Android Apps for the Brain

Why am I sharing my Top Android Apps for the Brain? Because I spend a lot of time (ok, admittedly money as well) trying out the newest Android Apps ranging in spectrum from gemstones and crystals to workout tracking software. However, one of my favorite areas of practice and understanding involves our brains, how they work and how we can use this knowledge to increase our whole selves. Basically: Self Improvement Technology.

Here is a list, that will grow as I do, of my favorite Brain specific Android Apps. Take a look and try some of them out. I am going to include both free and paid apps because some people are thriftier than others. The point will be to highlight how these apps work so that you spend less time searching for these things and more time benefiting from them:

(Please Share this Page on Facebook!)

~ Better Recall allowing you to remember the points you are making in a discussion and bring them up quickly.
~ Save time by training on the bus or train, more time for leisure when you get home
~ Stay sharp and improve your hand/eye coordination giving safer driving, more confidence in your sports abilities, from just pickup ball to more competitive sports
~ Entertainment and brain improvement: Stay motivated to continue your progress by trying new games, new techniques and allow your brain to work at its full potential: Problems seem smaller and easier and your everyday awareness increases.

These may sound a bit dramatic but these are actually benefits I have seen myself using brain training tools. Catching kids out of the corner of my eye while driving. Adding just a fraction of a second to our thought speed or reactions adds up over all the things we encounter and do all day. When I feel my wit dangling at its end a quick brain exercise or game is all I need to refresh myself. Oh and Jeopardy answers come more quickly... no joke.

...... Here we will start with the your mind and your phone!
Brain Training, Educational, and Memory Improvement Apps

Obviously designed for mobility, these apps are great for keeping your brain sharp when you have a bit of free time. Commutes on the train, waiting for an appointment, a quick break at work. These are all great times to take a few minutes and play some memory games, or reflex games, anything to keep your mind active and alert. Enjoy!

Best Android Apps for Binaural Beats

Binaural Beats are used to encourage/change our particular brain wave state. What this means is that for tasks like sleep or studying there are particular brainwaves, and mixture of these brainwaves as well, that are found. By introducing a pulse, or cycle of sound the brain will automatically, through entrainment, start to match the frequency of this pulse/sound cycle. The cell phone (handheld computer) is really a great benefactor as it portable nature allows you to carry around these binaural beats in the palm of your hand. So sitting down to study can easily be enhanced by firing up an app and putting on your headphones. Or help lull you to sleep at night.

Android Brain Game and Puzzle Apps

...games that make you use your noodle

Some of the coolest games in the Android Market also act as amazing brain training fun. The incredibly advanced graphics as well as a creative presentation allow the makers of the games to mask the fact that you are learning! This is only half a joke really, it is actually a wonderful thing to have fun while learning, in fact that is the way it should be anyways.

Addictive Puzzle Games

Use with caution!

The brain apps I have already mentioned are geared more toward actual brain training and improvement, though some definitely more game-heavy than brain-heavy. But the benefits are still more obvious. Here I will feed a guilty pleasure of all of us.... the addictive puzzle game apps. These are the games that no doubt involve some problem solving skills, but the play itself overtakes the benefits after a while and you find yourself playing for hours! It happens, don't worry. Obviously though this could cause some harm in other areas of your life, so use these games with caution!
Angry Birds
I am almost positive you have heard of Angry Birds, but to not mention it solely on its popularity would be unfair. This game/franchise now has hundreds of levels, versions, and ways to keep you playing. I love this game, just make sure to a vacation day before downloading. You have been warned.
Shoot Bubble
For those of you raised on Snood, this game is a close relative. Blasting up colored bubbles to burst similar colored bubbles, shooting angles, and many different levels and challenges, you may find yourself in a loop of "just one more game."
Restaurant Story
Part of a larger group of games from TeamLava, Restaurant Story is a styled a bit more for a younger crowd, but the time management involved with running a virtual restaurant is definitely a translatable skill to the real world. However, if not properly moderated, you may find yourself cooking omelets all day long.
Alchemy
Starting with four elements you combine these in different ways to produce new objects and creatures, combining those to further the discovery. I would consider this more of a thinking game, trying to think of the most likely combinations to make new items. Simply put, this is a great imagination tool. Be aware of the passing time as you play mad scientist.
Pocket Frogs
Finally a chance to act as a animal breeder without all the cost and clean up. Pocket Frogs gives you a setup to find, capture, and breed frogs, with each frog carrying 3 different characteristics, and each characteristic having many different options. You sell, trade. and gift frogs... each frog having a rareness value. Take a break from catching flies in the training pond once in a while, these frogs are virtual, they won't actually starve.

What phone do I use?

HTC Thunderbolt

I originally bought a blackberry years ago, when they were leading the smartphone fight. I loved it, it was a small Blackberry Pearl... it was great for a few months but quickly outdated with new touchscreen phones with 2 times the power. So I moved to the Blackberry Storm.... it was ok but very very buggy, though still a force to be reckoned with. But with the iPhone and Android moving quickly I jumped ship, a move I am glad I made, to Android and went straight to the HTC Incredible... amazing phone I have to say. A work horse and a beautiful phone...with terrible battery life. But that thing was great. So once that phone, after me rooting it and basically pushing it to its limits, went to the beautiful phone graveyard in the sky, I moved to my current phone.

The HTC Thunderbolt... amazing. You can find at it at Amazon here. This is a powerful device, and plenty worthy and packed with function that I will not be rooting this phone for a time to come. It runs smoothly and beautifully.
